Hamlet Homework: Closet Scene from Gertrude’s POV

1. Re-read the “closet scene” (Act 3, Scene 4).

After you read it, or as you read it, consider (you don’t need to write this down; just think!): What is going through Gertrude’s mind in this scene? How does she feel about what Hamlet says and does? (Guilty? Frightened? Confused? Worried?) Why does she respond as she does? What does she know, if anything, about Claudius’s murder of King Hamlet? Why does she say she sees “black and grained spots” in her soul? What does she think when Hamlet starts talking to the ghost? What does she think about Hamlet’s sanity? What does she think about Polonius’s death? etc.

2. Now do this creative writing assignment:

Rewrite this scene (using modern prose) from Gertrude’s perspective. Write Gertrude’s inner monologue--what she is thinking as this scene is happening--or have her retell the story in her own words. Make sure that your piece carefully follows the progression of the scene and shows the thought processes behind Gertrude’s words and behavior, as well as her reactions to and thoughts about Hamlet’s behavior. (One useful way to think about this might be to imagine that you are an actor preparing to play the role of Gertrude, and you have to work through the scene to figure out what’s going on in her head before you can play her convincingly.) Pay attention to the details of the scene, but use your imagination and play around with the character, too!

Assessment will be based on thoroughness, thoughtfulness, accuracy (detailed reflection of the scene), creativity, and quality of writing. 20 points possible. Please type this assignment or write it legibly in black or dark blue ink.

Then do this assignment on Hamlet's first soliloquy ("this too, too sullied flesh"):

Re-read Hamlet’s soliloquy in Act 1, Scene 2, lines 133-164. Read it aloud several times.
Paraphrase this passage (summarize it in detail in your own words to demonstrate that you understand it).
Take note of language that suggests Hamlet’s innermost thoughts. Jot down some notes about metaphors, syntax, punctuation, word choice, etc.
Many editors prefer a version of the text that reads “solid flesh” instead of “sullied flesh” in line 133. How would this change the meaning and tone? Which word choice fits better with your interpretation of what Hamlet is saying in the rest of the soliloquy?

The written part of this assignment is worth 10 points and is due at the beginning of class next time.

IB Global Lit Homework: “Requiem” by Anna Akhmatova

requiem: a mass for the dead; a prayer for departed souls

Your homework is to read and take notes on Akhmatova’s “Requiem,” which appears on pages 32-41 in your packet.

Read the poem through once to get a sense of its overall impact. You won’t get everything on this first reading, but it’s important to have a sense of the poem as a whole.
On your second reading, refer to the notes on the poem (notes begin on page 47 of the packet).
On your third reading, annotate (take notes on) the poem. Consider how Akhmatova’s use of imagery, diction (word choice) and other significant elements (perhaps structure, patterns, or allusions) contribute to the theme/subject of the poem: a lament for the victims of Stalin’s terror.
In our next class, we will discuss the poem in detail. You may be asked to share your ideas (orally or in writing) about any section of the poem.
Guiding questions for each section: How does this section contribute to the poem’s meaning? How does Akhmatova use language to memorialize the victims of the terror?
